“I am delighted that the Radcliffe Department of Medicine will be able to host the Oxford components of this exciting new programme. Our goals to harness genomic data in experimental therapeutics, and to exploit our strengths in molecular medicine and stem cell science, will make this an excellent fit.”
Hugh Watkins is the Field Marshal Alexander Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford. He is Head of the newly formed Radcliffe Department of Medicine and Honorary Consultant in Cardiology at the John Radcliffe Hospital,Oxford.
Professor Watkins directs the British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence atOxford, one of four such programmes in theUK. His expertise is in molecular genetic analysis of cardiovascular disease as a tool to define disease mechanisms and to improve diagnosis and treatment of patients and families with inherited diseases. He works on both rare inherited diseases, such as cardiomyopathy, where genetic advances now underpin diagnosis and new approaches to therapy, and common diseases such as Coronary Artery Disease where the goal is to use newly identified common genetic variants to define novel therapeutic targets.
He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and an NIHR Senior Investigator.
